WE LIFT YOUR CONCEPTS OFF THE SCRIPT AND BRING THEM TO LIFE

Whether you want to thrill-scare children with the filthsome and frightsome giants in the BFG or awe your audience with their first glimpse of Beauty’s Beast, we create unique theatrical costumes that bring your artistic vision to life

We’re not about off-the-peg costumes. Instead we’ll pluck the pantomime dames, giants, animals and all of the larger-than-life, fantastic concepts from your imagination and turn them into fully realised costumes that transport your audiences into the story

Bespoke Theatrical Costumes

Bespoke costumes for theatre productions are often required to be made specifically for the role or actor. The costumes have an important role in telling the story of the show and enabling the actor to perform at their best.

Our breadth of costume experience enables us to work on both the design and manufacture of costumes. From elephants to panto dames, we have the skills required to bring your characters to life.

The Process of Theatrical Costume Design

The creative work for bespoke theatrical costume design starts at the beginning of the production planning. The physical look of the show will be decided by the director or choreographer who will work with a designer on the creative vision.

Once the style of the show is decided upon, the scenery and costume designs will be developed. For each scene, the set and costume design will be created to tell the story.

The costume design will be carefully considered to ensure the appearance is in keeping with the production and if required, historical references are accurate.

For large high budget productions, there will be both a costume designer and a maker who will work together to bring the character to life. Based on the creative vision, the maker will create a technical drawing that features all the details required.

The technical drawing will consider all the required aspects of the costume. Embellishments and fabrics will be explained in detail with swatches attached. Structural parts will include measurements to make sure that the costume is practical.

Practicalities of Costumes for Performance

There is an often-repeated cliché that theatrical costumes are considered to be poorly made. On close inspection, parts of a costume may look odd or out of place and the colours can be garish.

However, these odd details and bright colours are not designed to be viewed in everyday life. Theatrical costumes need to be bold to ‘read’ well in a performance, and strong colours are required as they are softened under strong stage lighting.

Unlike everyday clothes that may be worn just a few times, theatrical costumes can be worn twice a day for around six months to a year. Costumes need to be very well constructed, especially for physical performances in musicals and fight scenes.

Productions often require costume changes, so the design needs to include features that make the outfit easy to take off and put on. As experienced costume designers, we can create outfits that look fantastic during the show but are also practical and durable.

Bespoke Theatrical Costume Specialists

As a designer and maker of theatrical costumes, you need to have a wide range of skills, from being able to understand a creative vision to having the technical ability to develop a three-dimensional form.

We have a breadth of experience working with all kinds of material and structure. There is no challenge too big for us, so if you need a giant costume or a fairy, we would love to work with you.
